In August 2015, the Tompkins County Health Department issued a health alert regarding an increased number of STD cases in the region. Staff from several local colleges, universities, and local agencies banded together to develop an action plan, including the development of this website and related print materials. The campaign slogan, "Never underestimate the value of Peace of Mind" encourages individuals to consider their risk factors, use protection, and get tested for STDs as needed.
Representatives from the Tompkins County Health Department, the Southern Tier AIDS Program, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Fingerlakes, Ithaca College, TC3 and Cornell University meet regularly to broaden the campaign and communicate about STDs, safer sex campaigns and related health information. It should be noted that this same group of people came together to discuss a similar increase in syphilis cases in Spring, 2008.
This public health effort represents a true collaboration between campus and community constituents providing an environmental approach to reducing the spread of sexually transmissible infections in Tompkins County.
